Sherman, Rear Admiral Frederick
1888–1957
   Sherman was Commander of the Carrier Task Forces in the Pacific Theater from November 1942 to March 1944 and from August 1944 to September 1945. Stationed at Bougainville in 1940, he went on to command the Lexington in the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942. During the battle the Lexington was hit by divebombers and had to be abandoned. Sherman then commanded the Saratoga- Princeton task force which fought in the co-ordinated attacks on Rabaul, part of MACARTHUR’s offensive in that region. At the Battles of the Philippine Sea and of Leyte Gulf, Sherman commanded the 5th Fleet losing the Princeton in the latter battle.
